We就是指:企业,国家,政府;

birth control=contraception=避孕!

Improved birth control=

Maybe Walmart’s new program, as Kelchen says, shows that the company has learned from the successes and failures of other employer-sponsored tuition programs, or, more cynically, it’s a chance to change the narrative about how it treats its employees. But one thing is for sure: There are a lot of employees who stand to benefit.

What is author’s attitude towards Walmart’s new program?

A. cynical B. supportive C. questionable D. critical

Maybe Walmart’s new program, as Kelchen says, shows that the company has learned from the successes and failures of other employer-sponsored tuition programs, or, more cynically, it’s a chance to change the narrative about how it treats its employees.

1. employer-sponsored tuition programs

2.cynical:

3.narrative:

1. as Kelchen says,

2.Maybe Walmart’s new program shows that

3. the company(指的就是沃尔玛) has learned from the successes and failures of other employer-sponsored tuition programs,

4.or, more cynically, it’s a chance to change the narrative about how it treats its employees.

But one thing is for sure: There are a lot of employees who stand to benefit.

1.Stand to benefit:

B. supportive

A. cynical B. supportive C. questionable D. critical

作者说了很确定,所以可以排除C 质疑;

Such stereotypes about spoiled, lonely and peculiar only children have endured for more than a century, despite a wealth of research showing lone children are usually none of those things and often do better in many areas than children with siblings. But despite one-child families becoming far more common, our fascination with their implied unusualness endures.

The discrimination against the only children still persists nowadays.

2.spoiled

3.peculiar

4.lone

5.sibling

6.far more common

7.fascination

8.unusualness

10. a wealth of research

Such stereotypes about spoiled, lonely and peculiar only children have endured for more than a century, despite a wealth of research showing lone children are usually none of those things and often do better in many areas than children with siblings.

切分:

1.Such stereotypes about spoiled, lonely and peculiar only children have endured for more than a century,

2.despite a wealth of research showing

3.lone children are usually none of those things

4.and( lone children) often do better in many areas than children with siblings.

But despite one-child families becoming far more common, our fascination with their implied unusualness endures.

President Trump is increasingly intervening in the economy, making decisions about corporate winners and losers in ways that Republicans for decades have insisted should be left to free markets — not the government.

The orthodox way of Republicans holds corporate boom and doom should be independent of political factors.

1.Interven in:干预

2.Republicans

4. winners and losers= boom and doom

5. insist

6. be independent of 不受…的影响

7.in ways that 就…

1.President Trump is increasingly intervening in the economy

2. making decisions about corporate winners and losers

3. in ways

4. Republicans for decades have insisted (that)should be left to free markets — not the government

The orthodox way of Republicans holds corporate boom and doom should be independent of political factors.

The marshmallow test is one of the most famous pieces of social-science research: Put a marshmallow in front of a child, tell her that she can have a second one if she can go 15 minutes without eating the first one, and then leave the room. Whether she’s patient enough to double her payout is supposedly indicative of a willpower that will pay dividends down the line, at school and eventually at work. Passing the test is, to many, a promising signal of future success.

2. one of the most famous pieces of social-science research

3.patient

4.payout 获得;奖金;

5.promising

6.signal

8.willpower 意志力

9.down(along) the line:

例句:we will make a decision on this matter down the line.

10.Dividend

11. be indicative of: 表明

13. to many : 对很多人而言,to kevin, 对凯文而言;

The marshmallow test is one of the most famous pieces of social-science research: Put a marshmallow in front of a child, tell her that she can have a second one if she can go 15 minutes without eating the first one, and then leave the room.

切分:

1.The marshmallow test is one of the most famous pieces of social-science research:

2. Put a marshmallow in front of a child, tell her that she can have a second one if she can go 15 minutes without eating the first one, and then leave the room.(三个祈使句解释测试内容)

Whether she’s patient enough to double her payout is supposedly indicative of a willpower that will pay dividends down the line, at school and eventually at work.

1. supposedly

2. Whether she’s patient enough to double her payout is indicative of a willpower

3. that will pay dividends down the line, at school and eventually at work.

(that=willpower)

Passing the test is, to many, a promising signal of future success.

A句:Yet it is hard to imagine that / the merger of a few oil firms today could re-create the same threats to competition /that were feared nearly a century ago in the U.S.,/ when the Standard Oil Trust was broken up.

1. re-create the same threats:

再次造成同样的威胁;

2.Break up :拆分 (如果你要是能知道break up 是拆分的意思,你会理解的更顺利,正是因为Standard Oil Trust过于庞大,近乎垄断才会被 break up)

B句:the Standard Oil Trust might have threatened competition

请背诵AB句;

Ultimately, the new study finds limited support for the idea that being able to delay gratification leads to better outcomes. Instead, it suggests that the capacity to hold out for a second marshmallow is shaped in large part by a child’s social and economic background—and, in turn, that that background, not the ability to delay gratification, is what’s behind kids’ long-term success.

1. Ultimately 最终

2. delay gratification

3. Instead 相反=however

4.A is shaped by B: A是由B决定的

5. in turn 反过来

6. long-term success

Ultimately, the new study finds limited support for the idea that being able to delay gratification leads to better outcomes.

切分:

1. Ultimately, the new study finds limited support for the idea

2. that being able to delay gratification leads to better outcomes.

Instead, it suggests that the capacity to hold out for a second marshmallow is shaped in large part by a child’s social and economic background—and, in turn, that that background, not the ability to delay gratification, is what’s behind kids’ long-term success.

切分:

1. Instead, it suggests that

2. the capacity to hold out for a second marshmallow is shaped in large part by a child’s social and economic background

3. and, in turn, that that background, not the ability to delay gratification, is what’s behind kids’ long-term success. (这里有两个that 一个that是 第一部分suggest 带的that,这里是suggest的宾语从句,还有一个that是指示代词that:那种;)

According to the townsfolk, the RSC deserves no subsidy because the theatre attendance is on the rise.

1.Anyway, the townsfolk can’t understand why the Royal Shakespeare Company needs a subsidy. =题干=According to the townsfolk, the RSC deserves no subsidy

2.(The theatre has broken attendance records for three years in a row. Last year its 1,431 seats were 94 percent occupied all year long and this year they’ll do better.) = 上座率连续三年打破记录,=选项= the theatre attendance is on the rise.= 剧院的上座率在上升

第二句和第一句构成因果关系;

3.The reason, of course, is that costs have rocketed and ticket prices have stayed low.

Liberals make good movies and television shows. Their idealism has been an inspiration for me and many others. Many liberals are very smart. But they are not as smart, or as persuasive, as they think. And a backlash against liberals — a backlash that most liberals don’t seem to realize they’re causing — is going to get President Trump re-elected.

According to the author, the backlash will change liberals’ mind to support President Trump.

1.liberals:

2.idealism:

3.persuasive:

4. backlash

切分:

1.And a backlash against liberals is going to get President Trump re-elected

2. a backlash (前面backlash的同位语)

3. that most liberals don’t seem to realize they’re causing

The inflation brought by the financial crisis, the inflation that is different from common one, will cause great harm on the economy.

According to the author, the backlash will change liberals’ mind to support President Trump.

Organisations of all stripes—from Facebook to the UK government to that coffee shop on the corner you once gave your email address to—have been filling inboxes with variations on the same question, in anticipation of a European Union regulation that comes into force on 25 May.

1.of all stripes

2. fill 填满

3. variation

4. in anticipation of :(绝对重点考点!)

英文解释:the fact of seeing that sth might happen in the future and perhaps doing sth about it now (预见到将来会发生什么,所以现在做一些事情来应对。)

He bought extra food in anticipation of more people coming than he'd invited.

5. a European Union regulation

6. comes into force 生效

切分:

1.Organisations of all stripes have been filling inboxes with variations on the same question

2.—from Facebook to the UK government to that coffee shop on the corner you once gave your email address to— (Organisations

that coffee shop on the corner

you once gave your email address to (that) (这里省略了that)

3. in anticipation of a European Union regulation that comes into force on 25 May.

According the text, Facebook and the UK government are under the regulation of European Union.

under the regulation of sth: 受到…
