What emerges into our sight is an eye-catching scene: a young boy wearstraditional clothes, with frustration on his face, telling his father that manyclassmates do not like the opera he performed; however, the father replies that“It is enough as long as you love it.”

The cartoonist, apparently, is meant to remind us of the gradual loss oftraditional culture in contemporary society: various culture traditions havebeen abandoned, many traditional arts lost. There are many factors contributingto this phenomenon: First, in an age of globalization and information explosion,an increasing number of Chinese people, influenced by western culture, tend toconsider traditional culture boring and outdated and they cannot see practicalvalue in it. Additionally, a host of people hold that compared with traditionalChinese cultures, exotic cultures are characterized by diversity, novelty andrichness. It is never too rare to see that foreign TV programs, music anddigital games abound in younger people’s daily life. Lastly, mass media, such asradio, television and the Internet, might exaggerate the advantages of foreigncultures and ignore the publicity about traditional culture as thecrystallization of Chinese wisdom and civilization.

Taking the above into account, what should be done to reverse this trend?In my humble opinion, the authorities and mass media should try their utmost toarouse people’s interest in old culture by publicizing and popularizing thecharm of the traditions. Meanwhile, it is of vital necessity for each individualto enhance the awareness of absorbing the wisdom from the traditions. Only inthese ways would our traditional Chinese culture never perish in the future.
